The House January 6 select committee has subpoenaed former President Donald Trump as part of its ongoing investigation into the riot at the U.S. Capitol shortly before Trump left office in 2021.
The committee in its subpoena of the Republican former president demanded that he turn over documents related to the inquiry by early next month and that he appear to testify before the committee on Nov. 14.
The threat of a subpoena has been hanging over Trump as the committee has aggressively pursued its investigation of the riot, which Democrats and media have frequently referred to as an attempted coup or an “insurrection.”
Democratic leaders and commentators have claimed that Trump was responsible for the riot due to a rally he held shortly before the incident at which he urged participants to peacefully protest the then-ongoing formalization of the 2020 election results.
The subpoena comes on the same day that former Trump adviser Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison for refusing a similar subpoena from the committee.
Bannon after the sentencing vowed “a very vigorous appeals process” to contest the prison term.
